Auditions FAQ
Where do auditions take place?
Auditions typically take place at a member's apartment. We try to make the environment as stress-free as possible! The exact location will be shared with you shortly after you sign up.
How long is an audition? What does an audition consist of?
Audition duration may vary, but expect a length of about 7-10 minutes. Auditions consist of sing-back excercises, rhythm exercises, ear training exercises, and a prepared solo of your choice (verse & chorus, approx. 1min). There is also an optional sight reading test that all auditionees are encouraged to attempt.
Who will be present for my audition?
Our Music Directors (MDs) will conduct your audition. Soulstice exec team members as well as some additional members may also be present for your audition. No other auditionees, nor other a cappella groups, will see or hear your Soulstice audition.
What do I need to bring for my audition?
Nothing physical other than yourself! Be sure to prepare your one minute solo song, and to fill out the pre-audition form that will be emailed to you after sign up. Pro tip: bring a water bottle!
Who is eligible to audition?
Any current McGill student is eligible to audition. This is not limited to undergraduates; graduate students are always welcome! No formal prior experience in singing is required. Our group consists of members from all types of singing backgrounds, whether it be professional classical voice training, musical theater, high school choir, or just singing in the shower!
After my audition, will I know if I got into the group?
No. Auditions qualify you for our callback round. You will receive a call a few days after callbacks stating whether or not you got into the group. Details about callbacks will be shared with you if you pass the audition round!
